Alumni in Athletics

They show up to SCS multiple times per week; they spend their free evenings devising plays and strategies; they celebrate after wins; they encourage following losses; they connect with our students; they mentor our students; they impact our students… The Salisbury Christian School athletic coaches are the epitome of servant leadership, and we are proud to claim nine of those coaches as our very own SCS alumni.
“Having nine alumni coaches in one year is an invaluable blessing,” says Bill Fennelly, Director of Athletics. “They relate to the students in a unique and irreplaceable way. They understand what it means to represent this school and our Savior on the field and court. They bleed Jaguar Pride.”

We recently caught up with a few of our alumni coaches to learn more about their journeys back to SCS.

What is a highlight of coaching for you?
My favorite part is seeing the improvement and confidence build in the athletes I have coached. It’s really amazing to see someone work at something and finally believe in themselves and achieve success on the field.

What SCS coaching memory will you always remember?
My favorite coaching memory at SCS was winning the ESIAC Championship for Girls Soccer this past year. It was amazing to see the work that those girls put in over the last few years and to see them do something that hadn’t been done before was special!

Why do you dedicate your time to coaching at SCS?
I coach at SCS because of the impact my coaches had on me during my athletic career at SCS. Coaching [here] gives me the ability to share my knowledge of sports based on a Christian foundation. I believe that all the glory is to be given to God for the talents and qualities that He has blessed each student with.

How have you seen SCS Athletics empower students?
I’ve seen SCS Athletics create a positive environment for students to set and achieve goals that they never deemed possible. One of the greatest rewards as a coach is to watch players face adversity and overcome challenges or failures that could have led them to quit, but [instead] they never gave up and were successful.

Why do you dedicate your time to coaching at SCS?
[Playing] basketball instilled a lot of confidence and a work ethic in me, so being able to show kids how sports can transition into all aspects of life is the most important part to me. If you work hard at a sport, you’ll know how to work hard at other things in life.

What SCS coaching memory will you always remember?
My favorite coaching memory was when we lost a game. I saw the team was sad because we built them throughout the season to be competitive and give it your all. Losing is okay, but it’s also okay to let it sting a little bit… which builds that work ethic to go after it harder. I asked the team why this loss felt so bad. One of the students replied, “It’s because you make us feel like we are winners, so we want to win.” This was, by far, my favorite memory because anytime I coach, I want [my athletes] to feel like winners even if a loss occurs. I believe losing builds character, [while] winning builds confidence.”
